The exhibition “RAFNSU” by Andreas Mühe deals with the horrors of German terrorism and radicalization. The focus is on death masks and cribs of RAF and NSU terrorists. Gudrun Ensslin's father had death masks made after the deaths of Ensslin, Raspe and Baader in 1977, which Andreas Mühe photographed. Based on these and other photographs, Mühe had fictitious masks of Beate Zschäpe, Uwe Böhnhardt and Uwe Mundlos made and also photographed. The cribs are from the times when the RAF and NSU terrorists were born. All photos were produced in analog form, none digitally.
The exhibition undermines any cult of the hero and emphasizes that terrorists are not born as such, but are children of their time. It places German history in a wider context and raises existential and politically relevant questions about our own thought processes and political actions in the present.
